Grahamstown: Anele Zikalala, a student in the music department at the University of
Fort Hare was declared the winner of the 2011 National Grahamstown Music
Competition on Saturday 18th June 2011. The prize involved a handsome cash prize
and an award for complementary fees for UNISA examinations. He has been studying
music at the University of Fort Hare since 2008. His lyric tenor voice has immediate
audience appeal and is carried beautifully by his natural phrasing and musicianship.
He has consistently achieved first class results for his singing subjects and has
become a tutor and choral leader in Fort Hare Vocal Ensemble. From his first year he
became a member of the EastCape Opera Company and toured the province in
Mikado and Opera Divertissements as well as the lighter music of In the Mood.
These programmes offered him the opportunity to sing major tenor solos like Una
furtiva lagrima and ensembles like Torna mi a dir. In addition he is a leading light in
the Singing Waiters which is a male voice octet of Fort Hare singers who entertain at
private functions, international conferences and public concerts. He has studied
classical vocal technique with Gwyneth Lloyd and is becoming a very effective
singing teacher in the process.
